January 2026 Calendar page: Turquoise Pitcher

-

We’re doing a little email series where I will share my inspiration, thoughts and/or reason for choosing each month’s calendar art. I was reminded that you like to hear things like this and it sounds like fun to me, too. So, beginning with January, here we go…

This month's art was prompted by an artistic technique called sgraffito. It is done by scratching through a coating of paint or glaze to reveal the underpainting or to create texture. It is mostly used in decorating pottery but works with wet paint as well and I couldn’t resist trying it. I chose a still life scene as a gentle opening to the new year and as a reminder that simple, everyday things can soften the hard edges of the day — use the pretty dishes and bring home the flowers.
